Bursting the confines of Impressionism, Matisse and a group of young painters startled the gallery goers at the Salon d’Automne of 1905 with their exuberant colour, ‘primitive’ drawing and raw energy. It was at this Salon that they were nicknamed the Fauves - wild beasts. In a beautifully illustrated group of talks we shall see that colour was the driving force whether the subjects were northern European ports, Mediterranean coasts, or North African exotica. We shall look at the work of major and less well-known Fauve artists.

and stronger for it. Composers also studied will include Shostakovich, Berg and Sir Michael Tippett (Midsummer Marriage & Piano Concerto), amongst many others.

BOOKBINDING: CONCERTINA BINDING (NEW DATES)
R090911 Starting with Lunch
Monday 26 October
Finishing with Lunch
Wednesday 28 October
Tutor: Lori Sauer
The concertina binding is much used, and often abused, but this workshop will get to grips with its potential and many applications. It can become a book in itself, act as a mount for artwork or become a sewing support on which to attach single sheets. Although almost exclusively used by book artists, it is a standard form for oriental bindings and its properties and modifications are key features for many other modern structures in use today.

ENLIGHTENMENT TO ROMANTICISM (A207)
An Open University Course
R091011 Starting with Lunch
Wednesday 28 October
Finishing with Lunch
Friday 30 October
Tutor: Dr Leslie Hoose
Napoleon is one of the most extraordinary men in history. From relatively humble beginnings, he cut his way through every obstacle to become one of the most renowned of military leaders. He transformed the institutions of France, and made
possible modern Europe. He was loved by his soldiers, and has remained amongst the most revered persons in the country which he transformed. At the same time, it can
be argued that his intervention in France, his personal ambition and his disastrous invasion of France brought him and his enterprises to ruin. To understand Napoleon in the context of France in transformation is a fascinating Study. Although this course is intended for OU students, other persons will be welcom, and will be able to participate fully.

BOOKBINDING: CONTAINERS FOR BOOKS - EASY AND CREATIVE
R091101 Starting with Lunch
Wednesday 4 November
Finishing with Lunch
Friday 6 November
Tutor: Lori Sauer
Most hand-made books deserve some kind of wrapper or box for protection from scuffing and the effects of light, heat and dust. In this workshop students will
learn how to make a number of different containers, which once mastered, are quick to make and are surprisingly durable. They can be plain or decorative, and will compliment a binding to become part of its overall presentation. A good binding without a container is like a painting without a frame – just somehow not complete! All intermediate and advanced students of binding should have the skill but beginners are also welcome.

FILM LEGENDS: CLARK GABLE AND JUDY GARLAND
R091110 Starting with Dinner
Friday 20 November
Finishing with Lunch
Sunday 22 November
Tutor: Peter Kendrick
Clark Gable (1901-1960) was in the box-office top ten from 1932 to 1943, from 1947 to 1949, and in 1955. He was at his best in a man’s world – in“It Happened one Night”, “Mutiny on the Bounty” or “Gone with the Wind”. Gable served in WWII and returned to MGM, but in 1954 he went freelance. He died days after completing “The Misfits” (with Marilyn Monroe). Judy Garland (1922-1969): “A star… an actress of power and subtlety, a singer whose way with a song is marvellous.” We shall trace her roller-coaster career: her early films as a teenager (with Mickey Rooney), her mature roles in
the 1940’s (“Meet me in St Louis”, “Easter Parade”) and her dismissal by MGM in 1950. Between “A Star is Born” (1953) and her death she made only three more films. The course will be profusely illustrated by nostalgic extracts from the films of these two – among the brightest of MGM’s stars.
