This short weekend course follows on from the course on Imperial Russian Ballet. We will look at the ballets of Shostakovitch, such as “The Bolt” and “The Bright Stream”, Khachaturian, “Gayane” and “Spartacus”, as well as works by lesser known masters, including Rodion Shchedrin’s “Carmen Suite”, “Little Humpbacked Horse” and his masterpiece “Anna Karenina”. Star dancers such as Galina Ulanova and Maya Plisteskaya will also be the focus of our studies. Finally, we will see how politics and music intertwined, controlling the lives, conscience and art of the protagonists, forcing some, like Nureyev, to defect.

This weekend course consists of three pleasant strolls within easy distance of the college and two evening illustrated talks. Two of the strolls – around West Lavington and Bishop’s Cannings – provide the chance to visit beautiful churches and learn about interesting literary associations, while the third features Caen Hill flight of locks carrying the Kennet and Avon canal up to Devizes. The evening talks are on literary Wiltshire and the pleasures offered by walking in the county.
