A busy hands-on practical day based in the teaching apiary and classroom, covering:
• General routine management
• Understanding and controlling the swarming instincts of the colony
• Methods for producing a replacement queen
• Methods for producing a nucleus of bees which could become a second colony
For hobby beekeepers this course will cover:
• Lighting the smoker-available fuels
• Use of the hive tool and wedge
• Recognition of healthy brood
• Identifying workers, queen and drone
• Identifying nectar, pollen and propolis
• Local sources of pollen and nectar
• Use of queen excluder and supers
• The importance of bee space
• Record keeping
• Apiary Hygiene
