Day courses start promptly at 10 a.m. and finish at 4.30 p.m. after tea, unless otherwise stated..

To book a place simply complete the booking form and return to us (we will confirm your booking on receipt).

BRADFORD ON AVON, WESTWOOD AND AVONCLIFFE

A beautiful eight mile circular walk of great interest and variety, This day will include attractive waterside stretches along the banks of the River Avon and Frome, and the Kennet & Avon Canal: plus farmland, woodland and superb views over the Frome and Avon Valleys. Historic interest is provided by the Saxon Church, Bridge Chapel and Tithe Barn at Bradford on Avon, the Manor houses at Westwood and Iford, ruins of Farleigh Hungerford Castle and the Aqueduct at Avoncliffe. BUDDHIST PHILOSOPHY AND THE NATURE OF THE MIND: INTERMEDIATE

This course is suitable for anyone who has taken an introductory course in Buddhist Philosophy at Urchfont, or who is acquainted with the basics of Buddhist philosophy and would like to know more. The course will explore Buddhist philosophy in more detail by focusing on a comparison between Western and Buddhist analyses of the mind and its functions, looking at Buddhist accounts of the nature of our perceptions of the world, and ideas about it.

PROPAGATING YOUR OWN PLANTS

Lean basic propagation techniques from sowing seeds to grafting. Grow your own plants for your garden and give to your friends. Discover how you get more difficult seeds to germinate and how and when to divide your herbaceous plants. Increase your plants from cuttings and learn grafting techniques for ornamental trees and roses. Fee: £41

HONITON LACE WORKSHOP

A relaxed day aimed primarily at novice or intermediate Honiton lacemakers. The tutor will provide guidance and encouragement as students work on patterns of their own choice. Although not a prerequisite, this is an ideal opportunity for those students who attended the March course to consolidate their new knowledge and sample the atmosphere of the residential courses. ARCHAEOLOGICAL TECHNIQUES EXPLAINED III: ECOFACTS

How does archaeology work? How do archaeologists use muddy holes in the ground and crumbling artefacts to make sense of the past?
This is the third of three day courses, which may be taken as a series or individually, exploring the practice of archaeology through real examples. It is suitable both for beginners, and those who already have a general interest in the subject. In Artefacts and Ecofacts we explore how finds and environmental evidence inform interpretations of site function, landscape inhabitation and technology. Fee: £37

MEDITATION - TO QUIETEN THE MIND

Meditation is an effective way of counteracting stress and increasing the sense of personal well-being. The day has been designed for those who have not meditated before or who have only limited experience. Sessions will include periods of seated practice (10-20 minutes) using ordinary chairs. No special postures are used. There will be ample time discuss practice within a supportive environment. This course can be done in conjunction with "Buddhism and Meditation" running the day after. BUDDHISM AND MEDITATION

Buddhism is becoming increasingly well known in the West today. This introductory workshop explores the key Buddhist concepts, the origin of Buddhism, its ethical foundation and enlightenment - the goal of the Buddhist path. The day will include an opportunity to experience a variety of meditative exercises, seated on ordinary chairs. No special postures are needed. This course can be done in conjunction with "Meditation - To Quieten the Mind" running the next day, or indeed alone. All are welcome. Fee £37

COLOUR THERAPY AND THE PSYCHOLOGY OF COLOUR FOR INTERIOR DECORATION

Colour is the first and most important means of creating a relaxed harmonious space in which to live.  It can transform, uplift and change an atmosphere.  We use it in every part of our lives in materials, fabrics and paints.  The day starts with basic colour theory including light and the colour spectrum, and moves on to a more in-depth look at the psychological and physiological effects that colour has on us all.  This day aims to provide students with enough knowledge to create not just varied and interesting schemes, but also ones which will support their own individual physical and mental well being; thereby resulting in healthy, uplifting and inspiring homes which reflect their lifestyle, personality and promote good health. DECORATIVE PAPERS TECHNIQUES

Experiment with a variety of creative and exciting techniques to make decorative papers for stationery, gift-wrap, greeting cards, envelopes and collage work. Many of these techniques work equally well on fabrics. We will look at how to apply historic and modern techniques, including batik, block printing, marbling, splattering and tie-dye to decorate paper, making faux leather paper, transferring colour with tissue paper and designing with stencils and rubber stamps plus a few other quirky methods! Fee: £37

PRINTMAKING WITH A DIFFERENCE

In this active and fun workshop you will take the traditional techniques Drypoint, Relief and Collograph printmaking and use them in a non-traditional way combining textures and layers of colour to create abstract and/or figurative images. You will also have the opportunity to print using a pasta machine as well as trying out the spontaneous and exciting process of mono-printing. Fee: £37

IT’S ALL GREEK TO ME!

Spend a fun day learning the Greek alphabet and basic words and phrases. Reading Greek is not so difficult once you are used to the alphabet as it is a phonetic language and by the end of the day you will be well prepared to sit in a Taverna on the beach and order a beer – amongst other things! Come and enjoy making 'artefacts' and unusual creations using flowers, cones and leaves.  You will be given special tips, and shown techniques, that will help to brighten your home during the Christmas season and the short winter days ahead.  Note: This is no ordinary flower arranging course!  You will go home inspired, having had a wonderful day, and armed with an array of beautiful items. ENCAUSTIC ART – PAINTING WITH MOLTEN WAX

Spend a couple of hours happily ironing with this ancient, but modernised craft – learn the art of painting with molten wax, using a variety of heated tools.  This course is aimed at beginners and initial dabblers.  Students will be demonstration led but will be encouraged to experiment.  An opportunity to create a unique gift, or card for Christmas!  There will be an additional cost of approximately £7 for materials used on the day.  Fee: £37
